Currahee Mountain June 2016

Currahee Mountain is an easy 2 hour drive from Atlanta (NNE), so Sean and I headed up there in June to check out the climbs.  Mountain Project doesn't have clear enough information on how to get to the crag for sport climbing, so we wandered for a while and took pictures before sort of giving up.

We headed toward home, disappointed at the wasted drive, and tried to reach a friend who'd been before for better instructions.  On the GPS, I noticed a winery not far out of the way, so we stopped.

Currahee Vineyard & Winery was kind enough to allow us to do a tasting even though I had my puppy with me, then we bought a bottle and drank it with the view.

Eventually we reached our friend and he explained where we had to go, so we headed back up the mountain.  There's a dirt road that goes to the top of the mountain which is drivable, but if you don't have 4WD you should consider how much you love your car, especially if it's rained recently.  There is parking at the base, but it's a substantial hike if your car won't make it up.

We parked at the top, then it's a short hike to the climbs.  Since you start at the top of the mountain, we set up top ropes and didn't bother leading anything.  If you prefer to lead, you could rappel, then pull your rope through, lead back up, and belay your partner from the top to collect your gear.  There isn't a path from the base of the climbs down.

We only did a climb or two because it was getting late.  Glorious slab climbs probably in the 5.8 range that day.
